Couple of Plates, Couple of Forks – Minimizing Our Kitchen

Before – some of the stuff we got rid of.

With the anticipation of moving into a smaller apartment and someday living in an even smaller itty-bitty space, we’ve decided to simplify our kitchen essentials. To do this we ignored the “What every kitchen needs” list and paired down our forks and knives to fit the “Simplified Kitchen” model.

First we decluttered the drawers that were stuffed full of weird twisty-offy gadgets. We didn’t know what this thing was! It got donated. The cabinet on the right held 8 bags of black beans! As soon as I lifted the bag, they spilled out through the plastic extrusions all over the floor. Who really needs all those beans! We also cleaned out the stove that holds all the rusty pots and pans and sometimes smells like burnt ‘macarghetti’ if you flip the switch to 350. It was going surprisingly well and the donation box was starting to spill over.

And then I opened the very last cabinet where my juicer sits dormant. Josh immediately voted to get rid of it, but I argued that it was essential to my healthy lifestyle (choosing not to add the part that it rarely gets used). We argued back and forth for a while, but in the end the juicer remained in the cabinet.

The process of simplifying our kitchen wasn’t too difficult. We looked at each item and made an honest decision whether we really needed it. That’s really all we did, no big secrets. It did help to read up on other peoples experiences, which encouraged me to think long and hard about that juicer. Meh, I’m still holding onto it, for now.

Below is a list of what we ended up keeping. We simplified our stuff from 123 to 40 items! Congratulate us :)
